Privacy Policy

Alter (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is built on a simple principle: connection without surveillance. This policy explains, in plain language, exactly what data the app handles and what it does not.
The short version. Alter does not ask for your name, email, phone number, or any account. We do not run ads, we do not use third-party trackers, and we never sell your data. The only thing we process is the text of your conversation with Alter, used solely to create your Digital Twin and find compatible people. That text is sent to one third-party AI service — Anthropic, the provider of the Claude model — and only after you agree to it on the app’s first screen. Details below.
What we collect
- Your conversation with Alter (user content). When you talk with Alter during onboarding, the text you type is sent — over an encrypted connection, and only after you have agreed on the app’s first screen — to our backend in Germany, and from there to the third-party AI service named below, which turns it into your “Digital Twin”: a short summary of your values, goals and what you’re looking for. This summary is stored so it can be compared with other users’ Twins to suggest meaningful matches. This is the only category of data the app collects.
What we do NOT collect
- No name, email address, or phone number.
- No account or password — the app requires no sign-in.
- No contacts, photos, location, or health data.
- No advertising identifiers and no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
Not linked to your identity
Because we do not collect your name, email, or any contact information, the content you provide is not linked to your real-world identity. Your Twin is associated only with an anonymous session identifier generated on your device.
How your data is used
- App functionality only. Your conversation is used to build your Digital Twin and to run the two-sided matching that is the core purpose of the app.
- We do not use your data for advertising, marketing, profiling for third parties, or cross-app tracking.
Third-party AI service — what is shared, with whom
Alter cannot work without a large language model, so the app shares data with one third-party AI service. You are told this inside the app and must give your permission before anything is sent.
- What data is sent. Only the text you type in your conversation with Alter, plus the Twin summary generated from it. Nothing else is transmitted: no name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos, location, device identifiers or advertising identifiers, because the app never collects them.
- Who it is sent to. Anthropic PBC (United States), the provider of the Claude model we use, through its commercial API. No other AI provider receives your data.
- On what legal basis. Anthropic acts as our processor under its Data Processing Addendum, which incorporates the EU Standard Contractual Clauses for the transfer of data outside the European Economic Area. We have confirmed that it provides protection equivalent to the protection described in this policy: under the commercial terms, inputs and outputs are not used to train any model, they are not sold, and they are not used for advertising or profiling.
- How long it is kept there. Anthropic retains API inputs and outputs only for a short period for safety and abuse monitoring, and deletes them afterwards.
- Where it is processed. Our own backend runs in Germany. The AI request itself is processed by Anthropic in the United States, under the Standard Contractual Clauses referred to above.
- How you permit it. On first launch the app shows a disclosure screen naming this service and what is sent. Your conversation is sent only after you tap “I agree”. If you do not agree, no data leaves your device.
- How it is sent. Over an encrypted HTTPS connection, from our backend in Germany (Hetzner, Falkenstein).
We use no other third-party services that receive your content: no analytics SDK, no advertising network, no crash-reporting service.
Data retention
Your Twin summary is retained so that future matches can be computed. You can request deletion of your data at any time (see “Your rights” below), and we will remove your Twin from the matching pool.
Your rights (GDPR)
If you are in the European Union, you have the right to access, correct, or delete your data, and to object to or restrict its processing. To exercise any of these rights, email us at the address below and we will respond promptly.
Children
Alter is for adults: you must be 18 or older to use it. The app is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly process data from anyone under 18. If we learn that a Twin belongs to a minor, we delete it. See also our Child Safety Standards.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of this page.
